A security guard shot a suspected mentally ill intruder on Monday, Oct. 22, who had entered WTTG FOX 5 in Washington, D.C. FOX 5 posted a story about the incident on their site.
The intruder, identified as 38-year-old George Odemns, had walked directly towards the desk station after entering the lobby. The female security guard told Odemns he couldn’t continue to walk further into the building.
Not heeding her warning, Odemns continued before the security guard shot the suspect once in the chest. Emergency services rushed the suspect to George Washington University Hospital. He remains in stable condition.
Two security guards, both women, were involved in the incident. The first security guard sprayed mace into Odemns face after he refused to back up. When that didn’t work, the other security guard then fired the shot that stopped Odemns from advancing.
Per D.C. police, Odemns appears to be mentally ill. In the past, he’s sent threatening emails to FOX 5 employees. Police believe that the shooting will be ruled justified.
Regarding the incident, one of the security guards said, “He thought we were females and it wasn’t going to get handled. … But it did.”
D.C. police continue to investigate.
